Living coastal is all about a relaxed state of mind and eclectic atmosphere. Blues, browns, whites, and creams are essential with pops of color. When decorating for a coastal aesthetic don't be afraid to mix and match different textures and colors. A coastal home can be sophisticated and relaxed!

Cork! Designed by Nature

The next time you open a bottle of wine an twist out the cork, take a moment to appreciate one of the worlds most unique species. Cork has beenin use for centuries because of its brilliant engingineersing and durable characteristics. Evidence of its use has been found in ancient Egypt, China, Babylon, and Persia.

Cork's Color Versatility:

Cork comes in a multitude of colors! In its natural state it is a light tan and provides a modern and clean aesthetic. Cork can absorb color better than most materials. Have you ever noticed the bottom of a cork from a red wine bottle? The wine stain that is absorbed is beautiful and certainly inspires further exploration of cork. When painted or stained it can appear as a wood material, tile, or even stone.

So what makes cork sustainable?

First and foremost, cork is harvested from cork oak trees, without killing or harvesting the entire tree. Once the cork trees reach maturity (around 25 years old), the outer layer of bark can be stripped off the tree without harming the tree in any way. The bark then regenerates and can be harvested again.

Cork Sustainability Facts:

Cork is naturally watertight, resisting both mold and mildew.

The material offers a springy texture for extra cushioning.

Cork is easily recycled and reused.

The sustainable material is both shock and fire resistant.

It is naturally warm to the touch.

Cork has accoustical qualities, acting as a noise dampening material.

Cork is extremely versatile in its use. Here as a lamp shade and more commonly in flooring, wall covering, countertops, and even furniture. Cork can be used in its natural color for a raw and earthy feel. It can also be stained or painted to achieve a totally different aesthetic.

The Memphis Group - Color, Pattern and Objects

The Memphis Movement celebrates the best of Italian design with vibrant colors and pattern. Founded by Italian designer Ettore Sottsass, the design and architecture group created Post Modern furniture, fabrics, ceramics, glass and metal objects from 1981-1987. The group intended to develop a new creative design approach offering bright, colorful, shocking pieces meant to contrast with blacks and browns found in modern design.

Sottsass was already know for his 1969 design of Olivetti's Valentine Typewriter. The design was marveled for its portability and the user's ability to use it anywhere. Plus it was manufactured in eye-catching red.
They drew inspiration from Art Deco and Pop Art and embraced color. Some might say their designs were superficial but that was far from the truth. The Memphis Group continues to stand the test of time and it still inspires today's designers.

Green Eggs! Inspiration for a Modern Farmhouse

Let me tell you about how I found out about green eggs and how they inspired this blog entry. Karen Levy, a fabulous friend, introduced me to my neighbor who has a budding business called NixChix Team in metropolitan Atlanta. From the name NixChix, you may have guessed that my neighbor's name is Nicholas and is in the business of selling organic, fresh laid eggs.

Anyone from the country or who has tasted fresh eggs knows what a luxury this business provides! Not to mention the fantastic colors that the eggs naturally come in. Beautiful medium to pale green and brown egg shells are the eggs natural appearance.

From Eggs to Modern Farmhouse

The eggs and the beautiful spring hues inspired me to investigate what makes a "modern farmhouse." There are many interpretations but the basic elements are wood finishes, creams and a warm pallet.

Patchwork Palette

Patchwork or pieced work is a form of needlework that's created by sewing together pieces of fabric into a larger design. A patchwork design can based on repeating patterns, colors and shapes in a more regulated way or randomly.

This tulip farm in the Netherlands is a great inspirational image for patchwork. The beautiful bright colors are laid out at random and still posses simplicity and refinement without a need to match. This idea is the same for using patchwork in upholstery, pillows, blankets or finish materials.

Missoni Home fabrics uses patchwork fabrics to separate sections of the sofa. It's visually stunning and the bright colors and patterned textiles are perfect for rooms with dark floors and white walls because they add contrast.

Bedding is another great space to use patchwork fabric. It adds elements of coziness and comfort to your bedroom. I suggest picking a dominant color from the patchwork pattern and use it as a way to balance the space. Too much patchwork can distract from the overall design.

The trees, grass and natural elements are wonderfully paired with patchwork cushions and blankets. The floral patterns on these particular cushions and blankets are an extension spring flowers now in bloom.

Sometimes less is more. Here an ivory sofa is lightly sprinkled with three pastel patchwork pillows. The patchwork effortlessly adds coziness and warmth to the plain sofa.

Patchwork and table setting work wonderfully together! For informal gatherings, try accessorizing with patchwork materials for maximum social atmosphere!

Lapis Lazuli

Lapis lazuli is a rock, largely formed from the mineral lazurite and looks beautiful when paired with jewel toned colors. This color can be the focal point in a space or simply act as an accessory; either way you will love playing with this color!

Here designer Isle Crawford uses the bold lapis lazuli for the entire space and balances it with pops of jewel-toned furniture pieces and black and white accessories. The pink, gold, white and black really bring this space together!

This is a great example of a lapis inspired space!

Lapis lazuli in its raw form has many different shades of blue along with veining. The geometry of the chandelier reminds me of the veining goes along well with the mixture of hues.

Lapis lazuli inspired accessories by Taika Dinnerware are eclectic and sophisticated! This is an easy way to add a beautiful pop of color on your dining room table.

These lighter shades of lapis accessories gives life to this neutral room. Calmer tones of lazuli are easily integrated in any space while providing a hint of fun!

These fabrics available through Knoll Textiles use fun patterns, geometry and tones of lapis. These would be wonderful for decorative pillows or upholstery!

Powder-puff pink adds a touch of whimsy to this all white room. I suggest using pink in small doses in a common area like a living room.

For those who are unfamiliar with my newest color inspiration: Malachite is a beautiful and natural occurring mineral with unique and regal green hues, textures, and patterns. It is commonly used to make jewelry, fine furniture, and extravagant finishes but is also a timeless and historical material that was reserved in it's use for only the finest and wealthiest of the social hierarchy. Today, this beautiful color and finish is available to anyone in want of sophistication, luxury, or antiquity into their space.

Shake Off the Blues!

We see shades of blue in our wintertime landscapes and the color blue can affect our moods both positively and negatively.

I think the best way to fight the winter doldrums is with the right amount of cheerful, uplifting blue. So this month, I'm shaking off the blues with a little bit of blue!

I love how designer Kelly Wearstler mixes a variety of mineral blues with yellow; another favorite uplifting color.

Kelly's use of turquoise blue with spring green and a little orange adds a little fun and whimsey to this children's room.

Colbalt and shades of light powder blue are perfect in this sophisticated space designed by Kelly Wearstler.

Red accents can be used in any space. Even if you prefer a calm and tranquil color palette for the bedroom, a red accent is a great way to add interest and fun.

Vivian and John Bencich must love red because they used it throughout their home including variations of the color like their daughter's bedroom with plenty of pink. As designer and architect, their home was selected as one of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles 2010 Homes of the Year.

New Week, New Color, BIG Statement!

Chartreuse is a 50:50 mixture of bright green and yellow and the French liquor made by Cathusian monks give its name to the color.

Not many are daring enough to use chartreuse in a room. It's BIG color so you don't need much to make a BIG statement.

I think it's a great color when balanced with the right color combination. It can be combined with turquoise, pink and other vibrant colors to create a bright, cheerful ambiance. If you want to make a trend-setting statement, my recommendation is pairing it with grey, the biggest color forecasted for 2011.

Stay tuned for great ways to use chartreuse this week. It's going to be exciting!

Designer in Color - Jamie Drake's Lavendar Bedroom

Jamie Drake designed this soothing bedroom using lavender-toned grasscloth, Italian lanterns and luxurious fabrics.

The textured throw at the foot of the bed is Indian-inspired and its smaller scale pattern adds variation and interest to the tone-on-tone rectilinear pattern of the quilted spread. Jamie adds a larger scale pattern with the checkerboard Edelman leather rug.

Though the room is predominantly lavender, it's not over the top because he's added grey-tones with the art along with the light walnut stained wooden nightstand.

Lovely Lavender

I love the fresh scent of lavender and the natural beautiful of a field full of lavender. For this entry I let the aroma of lavender oil take over my mind, traveling back in time to a lavender farm in California's Russian River Valley. The smell and sight soothes the mind.

The use of lavender in a room can have the same effect. For a soft, wispy feel, add a misty-grey hue like you would see on a foggy morning. For a little contrast and interest, add touches a darker pansy-colored purple along with cool-toned white.

Now relax and enjoy your new lavender filled room. Don't forget the lavender oil infused candle or neck roll filled with dried lavender!

South of Market Yellow

Here's a cheerful vignette at South of Market near ADAC West. It's a great example of using creamy white slip-covered seating mixed with daffodil yellow pillows, decorative spheres and art. The lighter toned natural wood gives contrast to the upholstery.

Designer Amy Lau used vibrant daffodil yellow along with turquoise in this contemporary space.

The focal wall is painted in abstract color blocks mixed with textured creamy white. The curved sectional is upholstered in natural, golden tan tones; and its shape reinforces the asymmetrical curvilinear design on the wall and in the textiles.

She cleverly contrasted darker stainted wood tables against the sofa and I love the organic shape of the large end table. Small pops of yellow and turquoise are throughout the room - notice the pillows and draperies.

It's a bold room that's perfectly balanced using asymmetrical elements. Well done!

Daffy Over Daffadil Yellow

I'm daffy over Daffodils because these vibrant yellow buds are some of the first to awaken in spring. They signal that more color will burst into our lives before we know it.

Daffodil yellow is cheerful and has the power to give any room a refreshing boost. A little yellow can make a big impact so don't over do it with too much yellow.

Color forecasting for 2010 suggest mixing yellow with neutral tans, fresh from the farm. For inspiration think about hay, burlap or a ball of twine.

I think milky white textures are a great combination with daffodil yellow. Consider giving your place a fresh makeover by slip covering chairs in creamy white linen or cotton. Add yellow accents with patterned pillows, art or accessories to complete the look.

Perfectly Balancing Blue

Check out how designer Celerie Kemble used just a little robin's egg blue to create two beautiful spaces. Each room has the perfect balance of blue.

The first is an inviting, energetic living area with upholstered chairs in a blue and yellow-orange stripe. I love the addition of even more yellow-orange in the space with the art and the pillows. This room has real pizzazz!

I'd love to stay in this dreamy Palm Beach home. What a great place to relax, read a book or take a nap!

Melon Abstraction

Designer Kelly Wearstler used melon painted in an abstract design at Hillcrest Estate to create a real sense of drama.

The graphic pattern is pleasing to the eye because the melon color is semi-transparent over the soft white walls.

The black iron banister coupled with the black and white linear patterned runner on the stairs make this a show-stopping space.

And for the perfect focal point, the sculpture does the trick.

I've pulled melon from my Color Box this week. It's a bright and cheerful color that can liven up any room.

Consider using it with green to create an organic feeling for your space. For a soothing look, try it with subtle green mixed with pale pink. If drama is what you desire, punch up the color scheme with a dark tinted olive green.

If melon is all you desire, contrast it with just black and white. This will make a bold statement!

Designer In Color -- Spring Green

I love how event planner Keith Robinson used spring green in his Atlanta home that's featured in April's Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles. One of his signature colors is green. And he gets his best inspiration from nature.

This space shows how nature can influence design just like I mentioned in this week's Spring Green Color Box. The color combination is lively! He successfully used red and orange to add interest to the soothing green walls. White and black give contrast to the mix. The lamps on the credenza add a touch of deep, red-violet.

I'm inspired by lilac flowers mixed with fresh, green leaves along with the orange hues in a Monarch butterfly's wings. Yellow-green complements red-violet. Adding red-orange and yellow-orange creates a pleasing color scheme that's full of life. Paint your walls a delicate white and add ebony to the mix for contrast.

Flower Power!

Olena Zvyagintseva's oil on canvas paired with a tufted bench upholstered in a powerful red velvet caught my eye last night at Tew Gallery. Talk about flower power!

I love her use of a split-complementary color scheme -- red-orange, green and blue hues painted onto the canvas in bold blocks of color. Details etched into the paint with the end of a brush contrast with her use of white.

Corky Davis with the gallery told me that Olena gets her inspiration from flowers in her garden and from traditional tapestry fabric from Ukraine.

Showrooms at AmericasMart International Gift & Home Furnishings Market invited designers to plunge into uplifting, bold colors for 2010. That's my interpretation after exploring for several days. Color on upholstery, on accessories, on walls, and in rug designs dazzled the eye!

Here's an example of giving a new mix to Christmas color. Ernest Gaspard & Associates in Atlanta infused their tree with fuchsia. The use of a single color captured my attention and I think it's a head-turner!

Still need to decorate your tree for the holidays?

Consider decorating your tree with a one color.
Go through your collection of decorations to pull ornaments that are the same color.
Shop for more in the same color family if you need to add to your collection.
Don't hang too many ornaments. Simple elegance will create a spectacular focal point!

Doggie Travel Tips

My dog Paisley took her first plane trip today so I thought these travel tips might be useful for those traveling during the holidays with a pooch.

Get a travel bag that meets airline specifications and make sure that the mesh is strong enough to hold up to little paws wanting to get out to be next to you. Paisley managed to make a hole in her carrier. Remember that your dog can't get out of the carrier while on the plane.
Talk to your vet about sedation. My vet at Buckhead Animal Clinic recommended something safe for Paisley. Consider asking for a stronger dosage if your dog has an anxious personality.
Travel early in the morning so that you can feed your dog once you arrive at your destination. No food or water at least 8 - 10 hours before the flight. Make sure that they go before you leave your house. There aren't places to go at the airport.
Don't take your pet out of the carrier in the airport. They might not like to go back into it when it's time to board the plane.
Once you arrive, give your dog a healthy dose of love.

Tips for Selecting Wall Color

Trying to decide what colors to paint your walls? Or are you considering wallpaper with color and pattern?

Here are tips that I learned from Ann Pailthorp, a color consultant with Farrow & Ball, at a recent House Beautiful Color Institute in Atlanta.

Layering Color – Consider layering different shades of the same color to help transition from one room to another.

Contrasting Color – Color contrast either adds drama to a room or opens up a space. For a dramatic impact, paint the walls a dark color with a lighter contrasting paint for the trim. If you want to give your space an open feel, paint the walls a lighter color with a darker trim.

Baseboards with Patterned Wallpaper – A light colored trim will draw your attention to the contrast line where the wallpaper meets the trim. Creating a grounding effect might be a better way to draw the viewer’s eye to the beautiful wallpaper. To do this, paint the baseboards with a darker colored paint.

Darker Walls – Paint your walls a darker color to create effect. Go bold in a small space like a powder room.

Depth Perception – A long, narrow room might not seem as long if you paint the far wall with a color that advances towards the eye.

Sense of Balance – The room on the right looks heavier than the room on the left. A sense of balance could have been achieve by selecting colors of equal weight. Try this in area where rooms connect with large openings.

Sample Paint Colors – Paint a large piece of poster board and move it around the room during different times of the day. Display the sample vertically against the wall so you can see how light interacts with the color. The light levels at different times of the day interact with the pigment in the paint changing the value of the hue.

Color Interpretation for Your Personal Inspiration

Why is purple one of my favorite colors while my best friend places it low on her list? We do know that color is a result of light and how each person’s unique retina interprets the color and sends a signal to the brain via the optic nerve. But science just hasn’t identified all involved with the brain’s ability to interpret color.

Could our feelings about colors relate to the symbolism that’s been associated with each color? Maybe it’s the meaning that cultures place on a color. Black is associated with mourning in our Western culture. Instead in India and other Asian cultures, white is used.

So what colors inspire you and are most beneficial in your life?

Primary Colors

Red is the color of blood which is vital to life. Red expresses power, energy and courage. Think about the red power tie. Remember reading “The Red Badge of Courage” where Henry, a young soldier, questions his inner strength and courage? Red makes a bold statement in the design of a room so perhaps consider using it sparingly.

Yellow symbolizes knowledge and wisdom and stimulates thinking. Consider using yellow in a kitchen because it is believed to benefit digestion. Or have your children do their homework in a mustard-yellow room so they’re at their mental best.

Blue is soothing. What’s more relaxing than gazing at the blue sky off in the horizon or at the gentle blue ocean waves lapping against the beach! We use water to cleanse so blue is associated with purity. Consider painting the ceiling of your bedroom sky blue so you have a calming environment for rest.

Secondary Colors

Orange helps inspire creativity. Place it in an office area or your workspace so you are at your creative best. Orange is often used in settings to convey vitality and to lift our spirits. Feeling depressed? Surround yourself with orange.

Green calms and helps ground us. A farmer associates a green field with a bountiful crop. Think about the rustling sounds as the wind gently blows through the leaves of a tree. A little green in your life can help balance a stressful day and is a great color for bedrooms.

Violet was one of most difficult colors to make, according to historical records. In ancient times it was created by squeezing the murex sea mussel called ‘porphura’ in Greek. Because of the challenge and expense to make purple, it became associated with royalty and power. Ranking priests wore purple vestments. Purple also is believed to hold the power to heal. Purple connotes valor and honor and when a soldier dies in battle; the Purple Heart is given as our military’s the highest honor. Saturated purple walls can make a powerful statement in an interior space.

How to Shop for Custom Upholstered Furnishings

In today's world of shopping for bargains, you may ask, "why spend a lot more money on a piece of custom furniture when less-expensive furnishings are available?" We are bombarded with enticing deals on websites and in catalogs showing attractive, affordably-priced sofas and chairs. But what's underneath less expensive, fabric or leather upholstered goods?

I worked for a furniture manufacturer that prided itself on quality workmanship and once again witnessed the making of a beautiful, well-crafted chair. Last week Kravet's Steve Bolick, who heads quality control for Kravet's furniture division, demonstrated the work involved in creating a quality piece of furniture. Susan Lorenz, who is Kravet's vice president of sales for furniture and showrooms, filled in details about the company's commitment to building high-quality pieces.

Here's what any consumer should look for when shopping for upholstered furnishings:

The frame should be made of kiln-dried hardwood solids and engineered hardwoods. Using engineered wood is good and helps give added strength to the frame. Quality engineered wood is made by turning a hardwood log with machinery to cut long, thin pieces of solid wood that are stacked and glued under high pressure. (Remember that engineered wood is not the same as pressed fiber board made from wood chips and pieces. Avoid furniture that's made with fiber board.)
Look for an eight-way tied coil spring system. Sinuous springs can also used in areas like backs to give reinforcement.
Foam made from petroleum and soy-based products should be used in strategic areas of the frame. (For instance along the front edge where the upholstered frame meets the loose cushion.) This eliminates sharp edges and adds to the comfort of the piece.
Cotton-blend batting is added between the foam and the decorative fabric. This additional fiber helps give a luxurious feel.
Stretchy fabrics like chenille and silk need to be backed so they upholster nicely and are more durable.
Patterns should match up. There's nothing worse than stripes or patterns that don't line up from the front to the back.
Another good sign of a quality upholstery job, is the piece's decorative fabric also is used on the deck under the cushion. This fabric should line up and match with the other exposed fabric.
All fabric should be pulled tight when it's stapled to the frame. Staples should run along the frame so not to be seen.
Skirts on sofas or chairs should be added so they are the same length from the floor all the way around. Furniture manufacturers like Kravet make skirts to fit each specific piece. That means a skirt is added as one of the last steps in the upholstery process.
Decorative trim like welt is added to hide staples while giving a beautiful finished look. Look for welt cord made with bias-cut fabric. Steve pointed out that he takes care to turn hidden welt cord seams all in the same direction so that the welt stands up nicely.

How can you find out if the furniture you are looking at is well-crafted?

Ask questions of the representative who is helping. Do they have any literature from the maker? Visit the maker's website for more info.
Lift up cushions. Look under the chair. Push gently on the sides and outback to make sure they are tight.
Engage an interior designer who can identify the best furniture resources.
Designers can also help you select fabric that are best suited for your needs so that your investment holds up for years.

Bananas Too Ripe?

Do you throw away bananas that are too ripe?

Stop! Peel and put them in the freezer so you can make banana bread or muffins later.

I just made two batches of banana bread with bananas that I've frozen. No one would ever guess that the bananas were frozen. My grandma Floy would be proud because she found a way to use any left over ingredients in her kitchen. Nothing went to waste -- a trait of a Depression era gal! So let me share her recipe for banana bread with you.

Floy's Banana Bread

1/2 c. shortening

2 eggs

1/4 c. plain low fat yogurt (I've added this ingredient so you have really moist banana bread.)

2 c. sifted flour

1 tsp. baking soda

1 c. sugar

1-1/2 c. mashed bananas (from the freezer or fresh if you like)

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. vanilla

2/3 c. chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts) optional

Cream sugar and shortening, add eggs and beat. Add yogurt and bananas and beat again. Add sifted dry ingredients, then nuts and vanilla. (Now don't over mix your batter.) Pour into two greased and floured loaf pans. You can also make muffins from the same recipe. Bake for 45- 50 minutes at 325 degrees or until a toothpick comes out clean. Enjoy!

Aging In Style

Design is more than beautiful rooms that are pleasing to the eye. It's also about safety, accessibility, and functionality. These are all terms associated with Universal Design -- designing for all people without need for adaptation or specialized design.

If you've helped someone you love adjust to a physical change like a broken bone or illness that effects mobility, then you've probably thought about ways to make space function better. How about living in a space where you didn't have to think about making alterations? That's the goal of "Aging in Place" or as we get older, we like to call it "Aging in Style."

Some people are being proactive and taking steps to ready their homes. It might be replacing door knobs with lever handles. Or when renovating a bathroom, building the shower with sloping drains so a curb isn't needed. What about a kitchen built with counters at differing task heights (standing and sitting)?

Design professionals like me are specializing in this area so we can assist our clients with wise design decisions that allow for "Aging in Style." I recently took several courses offered by the National Association of Home Builders to become designated as Certified Aging in Place Specialist(CAPS).

Italiana Design

Here are a few images I took when shopping in Milano. Of course fashion is everywhere there --whether in store fronts or on the backs of gorgeous Italian men and women.

I found an area of the city that had great Italian furniture showrooms. The showroom designers understood how important it is to create great vignettes to showcase what they are selling. Check out the vignette where papers appear to be in the process of falling from the shelves. This display catches your attention and showcases their lighting, sofa and occasional tables. The use of black contrasts with the white making the sofa pop out at the viewer. Don't you want to sit down? I sure did. Now that's design!

Lesson learned: Italians love to use the best products and are very proud that many of the world's finest products are design and made in Italy.

3 Key Ingredients to Good Design

This morning I listened to some of the top designers (Bob Brown, Matthew Quinn, Suzanne Kasler, Stan Topal aned William Peace) in Atlanta talk about Interior Design. In this complicated world, several themes seemed to prevail from the panel discussion.

Composition -- The right composition makes an interior space unique. It's important to have the right mixture of color, textures and proportion to make a room harmonious and unique. Understanding my clients' needs helps me create the right compostion of furnishing and finishes that suit their lifestyle.
Lighting -- Lighting is more than just adding lighting when the sun begins to go down. Look at the lighting in a room when the sun is up. Consider the use of natural lighting along with artificial lighting when designing a room. Proper use of lighting can distinguish different textures, enhance the values of each color in the room, and bring attention to interior focal points.
Editing -- Edit what's in the room. Too much can overwhelm a space taking away from the design.
